Here’s something that I found to be very interesting. Regonline.com is a service that provides a registration form to offload event registration. They add a very interesting touch with their video spokesperson. You can go check out a demo of the video spokesperson. According to Regonline.com, this feature increases registrations by 11%. That’s pretty significant.
What I like about this is that it works well to cater towards the less technically aware. It helps to humanize the registration process a bit more. But wait, isn’t this the kind of thing I normally oppose? Some kind of extra gadget that doesn’t really do anything? Well while my normal usability concerns would flag this, but this works much like the JavaScript on the Google homepage that brings the cursor in focus in the textbox. It simply provides additional help to those who have the required technology. It does not in any way hinder the usability of the form for those who don’t have that technology.
That doesn’t mean that this can’t be mis-used. If she held important information about the registration process, that would go against my usability beliefs. But so long as she provides a welcoming experience designed to add to comfort rather than functionality then it works for me.
