VOIP has held a lot of promise for a long time but it’s actually being deployed on a pretty broad scale these days. There was a recent suggestion that my workplace actually adopt it and it’s supposedly now under review. For some discussion of common issues, click here.
Some of the things we have going for us include scale, cheap bandwidth and a significant amount of money being dumped into a traditional system on a monthly basis. Some of the challenges to adoption include the significant amount of physical infrastructure already in place, significant startup costs and additional load on a centralized network model that might not be able to handle the additional load without a significant overhaul. I’m just guessing at the last one because I don’t know how much more our network can reasonably take in terms of load. We might be a long way off of topping it out.
I’m a proponent of VOIP and I hope that we are able to find a way to overcome the very significant challenges that lie ahead and get a chance to reduce long term ongoing costs.
