After the average webmaster gets their feet wet in the SEO world, they eventually start asking questions like, “How long should a webpage be to rank well?”
Gregg has written an article on web page copy length that covers that question. The simple answer is that there is no optimal length as far as SEO is concerned. There are certainly target lengths in terms of usabililty and readability, but not with regards to SEO. Quite frankly there’s no optimal anything when it comes to SEO. The search engines are well beyond targeted limits that can be quantified.
One thing that Gregg writes that rubs me the wrong way is that, “while all of your content could be included in a ‘regular’ web page, I think it makes sense from an SEO and user perspective to package some of it as pdfs.” Wow, do I ever disagree with that. As far as usability is concerned, things like PDFs are poison and should be avoided whenever possible. That being said, that’s my perspective and everyone’s got their own take on things.
