Don’t Get Mad, Get Even

January 29th, 2007 · No Comments

On the heels of Wikipedia announcing that it would set all of its outgoing links to rel=nofollow, effectively knocking out a good bunch of backlinks for many, someone decided to return the favour. Enter the Wikipedia nofollow plugin for Wordpress. If you believe in what this individual is doing, go download it and enjoy the satisfaction that you’ve fought back in your own way.

I don’t think I’d ever install a plugin like that, I’d just go back and edit my links for performance’s sake. But I have to give the individual credit. Rather than go post to every forum whining about it, they sat down and did something that could truly influence things. Very interesting indeed :)

My question though is how will the exclusion of every single outbound link affect Wikipedia rankings on a broader scope? That’s a significant change to the site and will have an effect. The only question is how big an effect and how widespread.
