A bit over a week ago, I wrote a post about Hosted Solutions. Well it seems they liked their first pass around the block and are looking for more. In particular they’re looking to promote their Raleigh Data Center. They have a bunch of data centres in Boston, Charlotte and Cary. It’s neat to highlight each data centre the way they have because it lets you pick and choose something that will work for you. Particularly if you’re going to be hosting gear there and you need physical access. They’ve got a full blow by blow of each and every feature listed at the bottom of their data centre page. Some of my favourites:
- Strong sheet metal cages. Can’t get a hand or foot hold (unscalable).
- Double man trap
- Biometric hand scanner verifies unique hand geometry image and a heat signature before allowing entry into data center
I have to say it’s tempting to go check that out. I’m not used to security features quite that extreme. While we clearly have security on our server room, it’s basically designed for single usage so the security’s not as elaborate as needed when you need to give a whole lot of unknown people free access to a very secure location. That’s a very difficult challenge but they seem to be up to the task with their laser etched, magnetic keys and controlled card access all over.
Raleigh’s actually not that bad a place to have a data centre, it’s a fair ways inland so even if a hurricane does hit it, it will have weakened a bunch before getting there. The building is resistant to hurricane strength winds and has ballistic proof windows, doors and walls. I can’t say I would have thought of ballistic proof walls… But that’s why they’re in the data centre game and I’m watching from a distance.
If you need this level of data centre, check them out. Though they appear expensive from the outside looking in, they also appear to have features that will make it worthwhile. So how valuable is your data?
