SEO - Thinking Long Term

While reading an article on Search Engine Optimization over the long term, I found some helpful reminders. In the article, the author reminds us that the only way to win out over the long term is to align our website with the goals of the search engines. Anytime I’m thinking of taking on a serious SEO project, I always explain this to the stakeholders. Trickery works for a little while (and it can work extremely well), but it is short-lived since from an SE’s perspective “the use of techniques that push rankings higher than they belong is often called search engine spam“, and they deal with it accordingly.

The easiest, most cost effective way to win out over the long haul is to build a quality, relevant site that readers enjoy. That’s what I’ve tried to do over at About A Webmaster. While I disagree with some of the author’s final conclusions those are personal disagreements and I’ll hold those for discussion on another day.

If you’re not interested in long-haul thinking, just go out and buy yourself a website :) Lots of people have earned far more money at this than I ever will by doing so. just make sure you know what you’re buying.
