Apparently there’s a need out there for a Wordpress plugin that will display things better for game console browsers. This plugin caught my attention for several reasons. I’m a big fan of accessibility. Part of that encompasses the need for all kinds of people with all kinds of browsers to access your website. This website is a pretty poor example of that because I just used one of the default templates with my own image as a header. As a result, if I was concerned about members of my audience reading this blog on the gaming platforms they support (Wii, DS-Lite, PSP), this would be a handy plugin to resolve that issue. At the moment, I’m not seeing that many of you using those platforms if any at all (there are a handful of unknown OSes coming up).
The better solution however would be to re-design the template to be more flexible and work across any number of different shapes and sizes of browsers. About A Webmaster is a little bit better than this website. I’ve also implemented a layout that grows or shrinks as you change the size of the text there. I like that feature a lot. But it still has a fixed width and on a browser that’s less than roughly 665 pixels wide, there will be some side-scrolling. That’s not great. Making your layout completely fluid will often cause readability problems on large screens. This makes it difficult to strike a balance.
From what the documentation says on the plugin page, About A Webmaster should look fine on a Wii, but I don’t know about the other two. If you have either of these platforms, please let me know if there’s any side-scrolling on this website or on About A Webmaster. I’m very curious.
This might mean either developing my own template for the blog or going to find one that works for me out on the web. I’ll have to think about it for a bit.
