Finally! I got stalled while editing an article about getting good feedback from your website’s community. It’s a topic that’s of interest to anyone who’s trying to build a solid base of visitors. That’s not for everyone of course. Many people work very hard to make their websites “slippery” rather than “sticky”, but that’s a whole other discussion.
At the same time, I’ve subscribed to Google’s adsense program and am giving it a try on About A Webmaster. For the time being it’s largely an experiment in the details of it all. I know that my traffic is low and I’ve already run my projections as to how much traffic I’ll need before I could earn any sort of reasonable amount. I crunched all of those numbers when I wrote up a business plan for About A Webmaster.
To anyone who’s considering monetizing any web project, I highly encourage you write up a business plan. It’s well worth the effort since it really brings you out of the world of high expectations and into the realm of reality. Knowing exactly what you realistically have to accomplish in order to break even then turn a profit is a huge eye opener. I think that’s when you really find out just how interested you are in a project.
All of that being said, monetizing About A Webmaster is not the primary goal. I write for it because I enjoy it. It’s proven to be a fantastic exercise in practicing my writing skills and I’m already satisfied with that. The attempt to monetize it is largely to help gain additional experience. The adsense numbers will be interesting to compare against my business plan. There will be some difference for sure since you can’t find accurate numbers on adsense CTR and CPM, only vague discussion on the topic. But using those vague discussions combined with my own experience with user behaviour on the web, I think my estimates are in the ballpark. I’ll find out over the next little while.
