Housing costs continue to outpace salary growth. I know that when we bought our house about three years ago, it was very challenging. It looks like buying a new home will remain a big challenge for most despite the expected slowdown in new home construction.
It all brings a lot of questions to my mind. First and foremost, where are they coming from? Halifax has been building condos, homes and apartment buildings like crazy for the last ten years. Over that time the student population has increased somewhat, and I’m sure the city has grown a reasonable amount as well, but enough to merit the masses of new construction? I don’t know the answer, but I remain curious.
The good news is that I don’t have to buy a home in Calgary… They’re experiencing a huge influx of people and that’s clearly being shown in the dramatic increase in home prices out there. I have family out in Fort McMurray as well and their housing crunch is really insane.
