One of the programs I have been sampling is Text Link Ads. Unfortunately for this blog it’s a total bust. Absolutely zero interest from advertisers and was much the same for many of the websites around me. Why? Well I’ve got a few theories. The first is the non-niche nature of my blog. The one niche that it dances around is that of web technologies and webmastering, but those are a dime a dozen. My second theory is a vast ocean of publishers and a desperately slow trickle of advertisers.
So why would I post an affiliate link in this post if they didn’t work out for me? Well the answer is that I did see it work for some. Most of the websites that were able to acquire advertisers were more traditional websites rather than blogs. They generally all had strong Alexa rankings, and at least a PR of 5. Being more traditional websites made them far more naturally targetted towards their niche. All of these things seemed to be key to getting someone to bite.
So, learn from my failure. If your site’s profile aligns with mine, don’t bother. If it fits in with the one I’ve described above, you’ve got a chance, but stay away from the technology sector. While the tech sector has some good sub-niches, you’ve usually got to dig down deep to find advertising revenue. Make a good website about mortgages and loans though and you’re potential pool of advertisers will increase by a heap.
