Driving back to Bedford from my mother’s place, we encountered the following scene.
That’s April 11th folks. That’s ridiculous even for Canada. Thankfully we only got a sprinkle. Some areas of New Brunswick apparently saw as much as 25 cm of snow. That’s a lot of snow on a decent winter day let alone this late.
The good news is that I didn’t take the snow tires off the car. I feel like I should, but with the weather going nuts like this, I’d be pretty dumb to switch tires now. It even snowed yesterday to boot. Nothing accumulated, but still…

Portugal is a sunny place, but we also have snow by this time. First time it happens I think.

Wow, it’s pretty late in the year for snow. Don’t you wish you could move to somewhere warm? We have been having some unusual weather too, though.

Do snow tires actually make that much difference to the handling of the vehicle and grip? We dont get much snow in the UK and our tyres are pretty much standard wet/dry ones for most cars.

Actually they make a world of difference. Even a bad snow tire will outperform the best all season (wet/dry) in snow.
Winter/snow tires aren’t only for snow though. When the temperature dips (apparently below -7 Celsius for most brands) all season tires start to lose traction because the rubber gets too hard. Winter/snow tires are made of a much softer rubber and stay very grippy well into the -20 and even -30 degree temperatures. An all season tire in -20 would be like having shopping cart tires on your car. Very hard rubber that won’t grip on anything.
As a side note, when some Canadians get to the end of a set of winters, they’ll just ride them out through the summer. That’s actually lots of fun since it’s such a soft rubber, you get buckets of grip from the tires. The downside? They’ll pretty much melt a millimetre of tread into the asphalt on a hot summer day : ) Do that enough and the tires won’t last very long at all.

We have a MAJOR storm due to hit tomorrow and lasting until late Sunday and possibly into Monday, 3 to 5 ft of snow, temps down in single digits 60mph winds. I just got through spending a week driving through a major storm. I’m ready for summer, enough with the snow, how about you?

Snow at the end of April, sigh… I am soo ready for summer – I can smell it. You’ll be taking those tires off soon.

I haven’t ever used snow tires, though I should since we get tons of snow here in the winter and I’m always skidding around and fishtailing. We just had some snow here last week but today it’s 63F and hopefully it’ll finally stay that way!

Unbelievable. What’s the weather meant to be like in April in Canada? Its full summer in England.

I’v just started driving lessons & my driving is not that ok. I have problem with clutch control & bitepoint & steering. But i can’t seem to relax & progress further as the 3 driving instructors i’ve gone through seemed to be on my case. I believe if i can get a few chances to leisurely drive around for a couple hours without being asked to be perfect all the time i’ll get really improve on the actual driving, then afterwards i can concentrate on road signs etc. I just want to know how to move the thing first,be confident like i’m taking walk in the park.
