As a webmaster it’s absolutely critical to know about your audience. In order to get a reasonable inkling about your audience, one of the things you need to do is analyze your web stats. But watching your web stats can get addictive. It’s a great thrill to watch the numbers go up for some mysterious reason.
The problem arises when you spend time watching you web stats when you should be working on your website. It can really kill momentum on a project, especially if you’re working on it during your evenings and weekends. The paradox kicks in when you get that jolt of inspiration when you see your traffic numbers jump.
For About A Webmaster that rise in traffic usually happens about a month after I make a big push and publish a few articles. The problem is that after I publish a few I’ll lose my momentum, stop writing for a while and watch the stats and wait for the influx of new traffic. If I could only just ignore those stats and just push through I know I’d get to where I’m going with the site a lot faster than I’m currently going.
So for anyone out there who’s having a similar problem, I’ll pass along the advice I’ve received time and time again. Ignore your web stats and keep working on your project.
