Now that my car is in getting repaired, I got a rental. It’s a 2007 Toyota Yaris. I was unimpressed by the looks of this vehicle when it first came out, but then the first time I saw one I found out that the car’s proportions make a lot more sense in the real world then they seem to on television.
Overall, though an attractive car, I wouldn’t want to buy one. The engine’s peppy and has a really solid feel to the transmission. A nice stiff suspension keeps the car well under control and makes for a pretty fun ride. But there are problems.
The rear pillars wrap around the back, restricting the view through an already very small rear window. Combine that with headrests that wrap around a little which act like horse blinders when you look back and backing this car up becomes a bit of an adventure. The shitfer also uses a very small diameter shaft that makes me wonder how it will endure the wear and tear of a well used vehicle. Finally, the seats are a little narrow. Not uncomfortably so, but if you’re wider than my current status of “portly”, you might want to check that out for yourself.
Overall it’s a nice driver so long as you don’t have to back up or look behind you.

[...] I’ve been driving this car for a few days now and I have to say that I’m liking it less and less the more I drive it. The problems with seeing through the rear window that I pointed out in my last post on the 2007 Toyota Yaris have continued. It’s just a fundamental flaw between myself and the ergonomics of the vehicle. [...]

[...] We decided to head out around 9pm and it still took a bit over an hour to get home. I couldn’t believe there was still moderate traffic on the Bedford highway at that point. The Yaris performed well enough. The low gear was pretty good to work with. The fact that it was light made it easier to stop. Still unhappy with all of the other issues, but I’m glad that I didn’t find any new problems driving in some pretty aweful weather, [...]
